HEIC vs PNG: Which Image Format Should You Use?

A practical comparison of HEIC and PNG covering compression, image quality, transparency, compatibility, and the right time to convert.

HEIC and PNG solve different problems

HEIC is a common filename extension for images stored in the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF). On Apple devices, a HEIC photo is typically compressed with HEVC. The format was designed to store high-quality camera images efficiently and can hold more than a single flattened picture, including image sequences and auxiliary data. PNG, short for Portable Network Graphics, is a lossless raster format built for dependable interchange. It is especially useful for screenshots, diagrams, interface assets, logos, and images that require an alpha transparency channel. Quality and file size

HEIC usually stores photographs more compactly because HEVC uses lossy, photo-oriented compression. PNG reconstructs its stored pixels exactly, but that lossless approach is rarely space-efficient for detailed camera photos. Converting a HEIC photo to PNG therefore often produces a larger file; a larger output does not mean extra detail was created.

Conversion decodes the HEIC image and then encodes those pixels as PNG. It can preserve the decoded appearance, but it cannot restore information that the camera compression already discarded. Repeatedly converting the resulting PNG does not cause the generation loss associated with repeatedly saving a lossy format.

Compatibility and transparency

Current Apple software has strong HEIF support, but compatibility still varies across older operating systems, upload forms, website builders, and business software. PNG has much wider support and is a safer delivery format when the recipient or publishing system is unknown.

PNG supports full alpha transparency. HEIF can also represent alpha information, but an ordinary iPhone camera photo usually does not contain a transparent background. Converting that photo to PNG will not automatically remove its background; it only places the existing pixels in a format capable of transparency.

A simple decision guide

  • Keep HEIC for an efficient original photo archive, especially inside the Apple ecosystem.
  • Use PNG for screenshots, graphics, lossless editing stages, and images with transparency.
  • Convert to PNG when an app or website rejects HEIC and PNG is an accepted format.
  • Consider JPEG or WebP instead when a small web-ready photograph matters more than lossless storage.
