How to Convert HEIC to PNG Without Losing Quality

Learn how HEIC-to-PNG conversion works, what “no quality loss” really means, and how to protect resolution, color, and privacy.

What quality preservation actually means

A careful HEIC-to-PNG conversion has two stages: the software decodes the HEIC into pixels, then encodes those pixels in PNG. PNG compression is lossless, so the PNG encoder does not deliberately throw away pixel data. That is the useful meaning of “without losing quality” in this workflow.

It does not mean that conversion improves the original or reverses HEVC compression. It also does not guarantee identical metadata, color-management behavior, or support for every item in a multi-image HEIF container. Those details depend on the converter and the viewing software. Resolution, color, and metadata checks

Pixel dimensions are not the same as print resolution metadata. For example, changing a DPI label without resampling does not add pixels. When accuracy matters, compare the width and height in pixels before and after conversion.

Modern iPhones may capture wide-color or HDR-related information. A converter that renders into a standard browser canvas may produce an SDR image, and different viewers can interpret color profiles differently. Judge the exported image in the software where you plan to use it, not only in a single preview window.

Metadata handling is a privacy and workflow choice. Removing EXIF can discard location, device, and capture details; retaining metadata can be useful for cataloging. HEICTOPNG does not copy source EXIF into the generated PNG, so keep the original when those details matter.

Why a PNG can be much larger

Photographs contain continuous tones and fine noise that are expensive for PNG compression. A multi-megabyte HEIC can therefore expand substantially as PNG even when both files have the same dimensions. This is normal and is not evidence of higher visual quality.

If the PNG must meet an upload limit, resize it only as much as needed. HEICTOPNG applies lossless optimization and offers original, 75%, 50%, and 25% size presets; every preset preserves the source aspect ratio.
