HEIC vs JPEG: Which Format Is Better for Photos?
Compare HEIC and JPEG for image quality, file size, compatibility, editing, and sharing so you can choose the right photo format for each task.
The short answer
HEIC is usually the better storage format for photos captured on a recent iPhone because it can preserve comparable visual quality in less space. JPEG remains the safer delivery format because websites, office software, printers, and older devices are more likely to accept it without conversion. Neither format is universally better. The useful choice depends on whether you are keeping an original, editing a working copy, or sending a file to a person or service with unknown format support.

Image quality and file size
Both formats commonly use lossy compression for camera photos. Lossy compression removes or approximates image information to reduce storage. The visible result depends on the encoder, quality setting, source image, and number of times the file has been recompressed—not only the filename extension.
Apple describes HEIF and HEVC as offering better compression than JPEG and H.264 while preserving the same visual quality. That makes HEIC useful for a large phone library. Converting the same photo to JPEG can improve compatibility, but it does not add detail and may create another lossy encoding step.
Do not compare quality by file size alone. A larger JPEG is not automatically sharper, and a smaller HEIC is not automatically damaged. Compare pixel dimensions and inspect fine textures, gradients, faces, and low-light noise at the size where the image will be used.
Compatibility, sharing, and uploads
JPEG is the practical default when a recipient, upload form, print shop, or business system does not list HEIC support. Its long-established interchange format is implemented across browsers, document tools, content systems, and operating systems.
Apple devices can sometimes make this decision during sharing. Apple notes that AirDrop, Messages, email, and USB transfer may deliver a more compatible version when the receiving workflow cannot use HEIF. That convenience can also explain why a photo is HEIC in the library but JPEG after transfer.
When a service explicitly accepts HEIC, keeping the original avoids an unnecessary conversion. When support is unclear, export a JPEG copy and retain the HEIC separately so compatibility does not replace your archival source.
Choose by job, not by habit
- Keep HEIC as the original when storage efficiency and Apple Photos integration matter.
- Send JPEG when the destination requires it or when you cannot confirm HEIC support.
- Avoid repeatedly opening and resaving JPEG working files; keep a stable original and export delivery copies.
- Use PNG instead when the job requires lossless pixel storage or transparency and the larger file is acceptable.
- Test one representative image before converting a large library, especially if color, metadata, or edits are important.
