HEIC vs WebP: Which Format Is Better for the Web?
Compare HEIC and WebP for compression, browser support, transparency, editing, and web delivery so you can choose the right format for each job.
The short answer
For a website, WebP is usually the better delivery format. It was built for web images, supports both lossy and lossless compression, and can carry transparency. The formats are not direct replacements in every workflow. Apple uses HEIF for space-efficient photo capture and storage, while WebP focuses on images delivered to browsers. Compare HEIC and WebP by the job
The useful criteria are where the image starts, where it must open, whether transparency or animation matters, and whether you need an archival original or a delivery copy.

Quality and file size depend on the settings
A filename alone does not predict quality or size. A lossy WebP export trades some image information for a smaller delivery file, while lossless WebP preserves the encoded pixels but can be larger. HEIC camera photos are also commonly lossy, so converting them to a lossless format cannot recreate detail that capture compression already removed.
Compare outputs at the dimensions and quality settings you will actually publish. Inspect detailed areas, skin tones, gradients, and text at normal viewing size, then measure the resulting file. Avoid enlarging the source or repeatedly converting already compressed derivatives.
Transparency, animation, and color need separate checks
Google documents WebP support for lossy and lossless images, alpha transparency, and animation. Those capabilities make WebP useful for more than photographs, but an encoder still needs the correct input and settings. Color appearance can also change during decoding, color-space conversion, or display. Check the final WebP in the browsers and devices that matter to the project. Keep the HEIC original until the published result has been approved.
A practical web publishing workflow
- Preserve the original HEIC in your photo library or archive.
- Create a working PNG when you need a lossless intermediate, transparency editing, or a broadly supported handoff.
- Export a WebP derivative at the exact pixel dimensions required by the page.
- Compare visual quality and file size against a suitable JPEG or PNG fallback instead of judging by extension alone.
- Test the image in the target browser, content-management system, and social preview before replacing an existing asset.
- Retain a fallback format when the project must support an environment that cannot decode WebP.
